However, a controlled glass explosion went awry during a scene, with glass reportedly striking Jennifer’s eyelid.
According to TMZ, the pair were filming a final scene at 1am, where Jennifer was inside a restaurant where a window would explode as part of the scene.
The website reports that the explosion didn’t go to plan and a shard of glass cut the actress’s eyelid.
While sources said that the injury ‘wasn’t that bad’, Jennifer’s eyelid ‘would not stop bleeding’, production was halted for the scheduled Friday shooting.
In Don’t Look Up, Jennifer and Leonardo DiCaprio play ‘two low-level astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn humankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth’.

The movie boasts an all-star ensemble cast including J-Law, Leo, Timothée, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Ariana Grande, Rob Morgan, Chris Evans, Himesh Patel, Matthew Perry, Kid Cudi and Tyler Perry.
It is written and directed by Adam McKay, best known for comedies like Anchorman and Step Brothers, as well as the Oscar-winning The Big Short.
Don’t Look Up was scheduled for release in 2020, but like many films, its production was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and is now expected to be released later this year after filming wraps this month.
It will be Jennifer’s first Netflix movie, and 2021 marks her return to the big screen after a quiet few years – during which she got married to Cooke Maroney.
While the Oscar winner starred in 15 films between 2012 and 2016, starting with her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, she only appeared in three between then and now – Mother!, Red Sparrow and Dark Phoenix.
As well as Don’t Look Up, Jennifer will star opposite Brian Tyree Henry in the upcoming drama Red, White and Water, about a soldier trying to readjust to life in America after experiencing severe head trauma in Afghanistan.

Jennifer Lawrence and Timothée Chalamet were seen throwing themselves into filming steamy scenes for their upcoming movie Don’t Look Up.
The Netflix film is set to drop later this year and production is currently underway in Boston, with Jennifer and Timothée the latest stars of the movie to step out on set.
Jennifer, 30, was seen once again rocking her character’s fiery red haircut and a leopard print coat, while Timothée, 25, was almost unrecognisable hidden underneath a baseball cap and longer locks.
The pair were seen getting pretty up close and personal around a campfire, as they filmed scenes with their arms wrapped around each other and were spotted kissing as the cameras began to the roll.
J Law was seen leaning over her new onscreen beau as they locked lips (and not subtly) while a couple of extras were seen hanging out nearby in the PDA-filled scene.
She plays Kate Dibiasky a low-level astronomer who embarks on a media tour with fellow astronomer Dr Randall Mindy (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) to warn the world about an asteroid that is on its way to destroy earth.

Timothée plays a guy called Quentin, who we’re guessing from the latest pictures from set is romantically involved with Kate.
The star-studded political satire disaster comedy also stars Meryl Streep (as the US president), Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Ariana Grande, Matthew Perry and Avengers star Chris Evans.

According to TMZ, she and Timothée had been filming in the early hours of the morning, where Jennifer was sitting inside a restaurant where a window would then explode as part of the scene.
Sources claimed that while the injury ‘wasn’t that bad’, Jennifer’s eyelid ‘wouldn’t stop bleeding’ and shooting was halted as a result.
Don’t Look Up will be Jennifer’s first Netflix original film and it was originally scheduled for release in 2020, but was forced to push back its release date due to production delays as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It will now be released later this year in 2021 and shedding light on what it’s been like filming amid the pandemic, Jennifer’s co-star Meryl said she’s found it a little odd.
She told Stephen Colbert while appearing on The Late Show: ‘The whole thing is so eerie and odd and disconcerting.’
Don’t Look Up drops on Netflix later this year.

Jennifer had been filming scenes inside a restaurant around 1am on Friday morning when a controlled glass explosion was carried out – blowing out the glass of a window.
The stunt didn’t exactly go to plan, however, and Jennifer ended up getting hurt as a shard of glass struck her in the process, with the rest of Friday’s scheduled filming halted.
Sources revealed at the time that Jennifer’s eye ‘wouldn’t stop bleeding’ – prompting bosses to shut down set – despite her injury being described as ‘not that bad’.
Production picked up again on Saturday and Jennifer was soon spotted back in character, getting stuck into intimate scenes with her co-star Timothée Chalamet, as the pair were pictured kissing around a fire.

The latest pictures from set show Jennifer once again rocking her character’s red hair, while a cut was clearly visible above one eye.
Still, the Hunger Games star seemed in good spirits and was in the zone as she stepped back out in front of the camera, dressed in a leopard print coat and a grey motif T-shirt.
Timothée, meanwhile, looked totally different as he stepped out on set with much longer and curlier locks.
Dressed in a long green coat and backwards baseball cap, the actor’s character Quentin was seen holding a beer and looked like he was shouting over at someone, before he kicked back on an old bench with Jennifer and the pair packed on the PDA.

Not much else is currently known about Timothée’s character Quentin, while Jennifer plays a low-level astronomer, Kate Dibiasky, in the political satire movie.
Don’t Look Up boasts a stellar cast, with Meryl Streep (who plays the US president), Friends star Matthew Perry, Chris Evans and Jonah Hill joining Jennifer and DiCaprio onscreen.
The upcoming comedy is set for release later this year and will be Jennifer’s first Netflix original film.
It originally due for release in 2020, but was ultimately pushed back due to production delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fans last saw Jennifer in Marvel’s X-Men sequel Dark Phoenix – also starring Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner – and spy thriller Red Sparrow released in 2018.

Catt Sadler opens up about how Jennifer Lawrence and Hollywood stars showed their support for her in recent years (Provider: Getty)
Journalist and podcast host Catt Sadler is all about women empowering and supporting each other – and she’s glad to report that Jennifer Lawrence feels the same.
The former E! News anchor famously stepped away from her roles on the network in 2017 over gender pay disparity issues before launching her own podcast among other projects.
However, the It Sure Is A Beautiful Day host revealed that she hadn’t been sure just how much support she would actually receive from some of the stars that had spoken out in agreement with her decision.
Thankfully, when the 46-year-old decided to launch her first podcast, Naked, she was thrilled to discover so many public figures reaching out to see how they could help.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the TV host recalled: ‘I’ve been amazed and humbled by the Hollywood women who have shown up for me, yes. You work for a huge network with international reach for more than a decade, you know that there’s a lot of power behind you when you go to work each day.
‘But then if you break out on your own, you don’t know how that is going to go. When I launched my last podcast and all of these remarkable, gifted women agreed to come to my house, sit in my bedroom and share of themselves in a meaningful way for my audience – that was not lost on me.’
She continued: ‘I would get DM’s or emails from a host of females – everyone from Amy Schumer to Gwyneth Paltrow – that would say: “we want to support you”. I am genuinely touched and grateful.’
Catt continued: ‘The interview that will probably go down as the most surreal is with Jennifer Lawrence. We were fond of one another and knew each other in that kind of Hollywood nice-and-respectful way, but when I left E! she really went out of her way to have my back.
‘Previously, her own public stances on equality and representation had inspired me and I was a legitimate fan. To then have her in my corner was pretty special. She’s the kind of girl who if she says she’s going to do something, she does it. She shows up.’
The journalist explained: ‘So when I invited her to my house to record for my podcast and she said yes, I literally did a flip on my bed. (I recorded it and still have the video today.) I was giddy with excitement.
‘And then when the time came she shows up in my bedroom, takes her bra off, gets cozy and gives me the “Jennifer” people love. Well I was beyond thankful.’
Catt then added: ‘Not a bad day at work for a girl who grew up in the farmlands of Indiana watching movies dreaming of Hollywood – a place, far far away.’
Indeed, her career has seen her become a household name with entertainment fans after years of working the most exclusive red carpets and interviewing the biggest stars in the biz.
Now Catt is using her skills and talent as an interviewer in order to have conversations that will uplift and inspire fans after a very tough year for all.
Opening up about how she decided to launch her new Dear Media podcast, It Sure Is A Beautiful Day, Catt explained: ‘What started out as a brief “hiatus” from my last podcast during the pandemic turned into several months away from the mic. Like many, the weight of the last year really had an effect on me.
‘By the time I pulled myself together and was ready to create again, I genuinely felt like I needed a new tone and format. Covid had many people across the globe re-examining their lives in many ways.’
She continued: ‘How could I serve them? I also felt like things were pretty dismal for so long that we needed some uplifting content. It Sure is a Beautiful Day was born out of that.’
The podcast will see Catt have candid conversations with a plethora of different guests from all walks of life.
Naturally, there will be a few famous names in the mix such as hitmaker Ava Max. However, Catt is keen to also introduce listeners to other disruptors and thought-leaders that they might not be familiar with.
She explained: ‘I am still fascinated by pop culture and will most definitely continue those conversations, but mostly I’m interested in good stories and people who are making an impact. The beauty of having my own show is that I get to choose who I speak with – and really that’s just anyone I am intrigued by or who teaches me personally or is a disruptor on some level or perhaps a thought-leader.
‘If they resonate with me and peak my genuine interest, I invite them on because I know we’ll have a compelling conversation. I want people to come to the show and smile when they’re listening.’
She added: ‘I want them to listen and feel entertained, inspired, and even comforted in their day to day lives.’

Speaking on The Bitch Bible podcast, the 30-year-old told her friend Heather McMahan: ‘Breaking f news!’

Jen is now heavily linked to ex Ben following the collapse of her relationship with Alex Rodriguez last month.
Bennifer got engaged in 2002 but split in 2004 – shortly before they were due to walk down the aisle together.
According to reports, it seems they are enjoying each other’s company once again, with pictures emerging of the pair driving around Montana together.
A source told People of their reunion: ‘[Jennifer] spent several days with Ben out of town. They have a strong connection. It’s all been quick and intense, but Jennifer is happy.’

Although the rumour mill has been on overdrive in recent weeks, neither has publicly addressed the reunion claims – while Alex threw some subtle shade at his former flame.
Another source insisted to E! News that the former couple are just good friends, adding: ‘They have been in touch here and there throughout the years.
‘Ben reached out to her to see how she was doing, and they had dinner together a few times within this last month. It’s natural between them and the chemistry is unreal.
‘They picked up where they last left off and are enjoying each other’s company right now.’

However, things get even more terrifying when it becomes apparent that no one seems to care.
With the help of Dr Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), they embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate) and Jack (Tyler Perry).
With six months to go, the pair are on a mission to get the world to just look up.

The trailer starts with Leo’s Randall hyperventilating over the discovery he’s made, and attempting to convince Meryl’s Orlean and Jonah’s Jason that it’s something to be taken seriously.
‘You know how many “the world is ending” meetings we’ve had over the last two years’ Orlean asks, as Jason adds: ‘Drought, famine, hole in the ozone, it’s so boring.’
Set for release on December 24, it’s safe to say fans can’t wait for Christmas.

Jennifer Lawrence is pregnant with her first child, a representative has confirmed.
The Oscar-winning actress, 31, is expecting a little one with her New York City art dealer husband Cooke Maroney, a spokesperson told People.
The couple were first linked in May 2018 after being set up by a close friend of Jennifer’s, before making their first public outing in June 2018.
They tied the knot one year later, with a ceremony in October 2019 at a mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.
Celebrity guests were said to include Emma Stone, Kris Jenner and Amy Schumer.
Hunger Games star Jennifer, who took home the best actress Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, previously described Cooke as ‘the greatest human being I’ve ever met’.

Speaking on a 2019 podcast NAKED, she was asked why she married him, to which she responded: ‘I don’t know, I started with the basics: “How do I feel? Is he nice? Is he kind?”
‘It’s just – this is the one, I know that sounds really stupid but he’s just, he’s the greatest person I’ve ever met, so I feel very honoured to become a Maroney.’
She added: ‘He’s my best friend so I want to legally bind him to me forever. And fortunately, the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest. You find your favourite person in the planet and you’re like, “you can’t leave”. So, I wanted to take that offer.’

The superstar duo will play astronomers who discover there is a comet heading directly towards earth.
Don’t Look Up will be released in cinemas in December and on Netflix on December 24.

A timeline of Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney’s relationship as they confirm baby (Picture: AFP/Rex)
Jennifer Lawrence and her husband Cooke Maroney like to keep their relationship low-key, but that doesn’t mean they’re anything short of couple goals.
The Hunger Games actress, 31, and Cooke have been together since 2018 and recently confirmed that they are having a baby together.
Jennifer’s rep revealed that the star is pregnant with her first child to People, with the exciting news coming two years after she and Cooke tied the knot.
So, as the couple prepare themselves for their next chapter, here’s a look back at their relationship so far…
2018: Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney first start dating
Jennifer and New York City art dealer Cooke were introduced by mutual friends in the spring of 2018. Romance quickly blossomed and the pair began dating, with sources revealing Jen was pretty smitten with her new beau.

She had split from director Darren Aronofsky the year before.
‘She is smiling like I have never seen her do with any of her previous boyfriends,’ a source revealed to People, adding that the pair had ‘great chemistry’.
Their romance was solidified by the pair jetting off overseas together and enjoying trips to Rome and Paris.
Soon, Jen and Cooke were seen indulging in PDAs on the streets of NYC and speculation soon started mounting that the couple were engaged, after Jennifer was spotted with a huge ring on her finger.
Keeping coy, however, the couple – who kept their romance away from the public eye and off social media – didn’t address the rumours.

February 2019: JLaw and Cooke are engaged
Jennifer and Cooke’s engagement was finally confirmed in February 2019, although the pair never publicly commented on the milestone.
They then started to hunt for apartments together in New York, with Jennifer and Cooke throwing an engagement party in May.
June 2019: Jennifer opened up about her relationship with Cooke
Known for being notoriously private, Jennifer finally opened up about her relationship with Cooke for the first time in June 2019 during a podcast appearance on Naked with Catt Sadler.
‘He’s the greatest human being I’ve ever met. I wasn’t at a place where I was like, “I’m ready to get married,” I just met Cooke and I wanted to marry him,’ she gushed.
‘We wanted to marry each other, we wanted to commit fully. He’s my best friend, so I want to legally bind him to me forever.’
She said of Cooke: ‘How do I feel? Is he nice? Is he kind? It’s just… this is the one, I know that sounds really stupid but he’s just… he’s the greatest person I’ve ever met, so I feel very honoured to become a Maroney.’
Jennifer revealed to Entertainment Tonight that it had been ‘very, very easy’ to say yes when Cooke proposed.

Insiders claimed to People at the time: ‘It was an all-night party. Jen and Cooke were the last people to leave at 5.30am… she looked stunning in a jewelled dress.’
November 2019 – The newlyweds honeymoon
To round off their big day, Jennifer and Cooke later headed on their luxury honeymoon that saw them stay at a $12,700 ($9.9k) a night villa in Indonesia.
The duo headed to the luxury resort of Nihi Sumba where they kicked back at the exclusive Mandaka resort – comprising of just five luxury villas, which they had booked out for their stay.
The resort is set on 530 private acres and has private plunge pools and a host of activities for newlyweds to take part in, including horseback riding.
September 2021 – Jennifer Lawrence is pregnant
Following a series of rare public appearances from Jennifer and Cooke in New York throughout lockdown in 2020, fans were delighted to hear that the couple are now expecting their first baby together.
Again, neither Jennifer or Cooke have publicly commented on her pregnancy, but a rep for Jen confirmed she is expecting.

Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer joined forces to protest against the controversial abortion law this weekend.
The Hollywood stars joined campaigners at the Rally For Abortion Justice in Washington DC on Saturday, to make their voices heard about women’s rights to reproduce.
Trainwreck actress Amy shared a photo of her and Hunger Games star Jennifer posing in the middle of the crowds, and holding up signs.
Jennifer’s banner read: ‘Women can’t be free if they don’t control their bodies,’ while Amy’s said: ‘Abortion is essential.’
In the caption, Amy wrote: ‘I don’t have a uterus and she is pregnant but we out here @womensmarch @plannedparenthood #rallyforabortionjustice 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼.’

‘We deserve sovereignty over our own bodies. To have come this far and to go backwards in 2021 is insanity. We will not allow it.’

As the trailer shows, no one seems to care when they try and break this news to President Orlean (Streep) and her Chief of Staff, Jason (Hill).
In fact, the pair have even less success when they try to share the news through the media, with a comically awkward appearance on The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Blanchett) and Jack (Perry).

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the 31-year-old explained that she was travelling from Kentucky in a private plane in 2017, after wrapping on Mother!, when there was a ‘loud noise’ mid-flight.
She was informed that the two engines on the plane had failed, with the plane ‘dipping wildly’ as the pilot scrambled to make an emergency landing.
‘My skeleton was all that was left in the seat,’ she recalled. ‘We were all just going to die. I started leaving little mental voicemails to my family, you know, “I’ve had a great life, I’m sorry.”’
Jennifer explained that she just ‘felt guilty’ in that moment, stating that everyone was ‘going to be so bummed’.

She then saw a runway below, with fire trucks and ambulances prepared for whatever outcome.
‘I started praying. Not to the specific God I grew up with, because he was terrifying and a very judgmental guy,’ she continued. ‘But I thought, Oh, my God, maybe we’ll survive this? I’ll be a burn victim, this will be painful, but maybe we’ll live.’
The plane landed on the runway in Buffalo and bounced into the air before slamming back into the ground, with emergency services breaking the door open to get the unscathed crew and passengers to safety.
‘It made me a lot weaker,’ the Oscar-winner added of the experience. ‘Flying is horrific and I have to do it all the time.’

Jennifer – who leads an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep in her latest film, Don’t Look Up – recently made headlines after confirming her pregnancy.
The Silver Linings Playbook star has remained fiercely private of her family life but shared her baby news with People Magazine.
She was first linked to husband Cooke in 2018, months after her plane ordeal, with the pair announcing their engagement the following year before tying the knot in a low-key ceremony in 2019.
While she has kept her love life under wraps over the last few years, she heaped praise on her husband during an appearance on the NAKED podcast, sharing how ‘honored’ she was to be part of his family.
When asked why they decided to get married, Jennifer replied: ‘I don’t know, I started with the basics: “How do I feel? Is he nice? Is he kind?”
‘It’s just – this is the one, I know that sounds really stupid but he’s just, he’s the greatest person I’ve ever met, so I feel very honored to become a Maroney.
‘He’s my best friend so I want to legally bind him to me forever. And fortunately, the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest. You find your favorite person in the planet and you’re like, “you can’t leave”. So, I wanted to take that offer.’

Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about the ‘trauma’ of the leak (Picture: Getty Images)
Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out on the ‘trauma’ of having her nude photos leaked online.
In 2014, iCloud hackers published nude photos of Jennifer online, with the star now saying: ‘Anybody can go look at my naked body without my consent, any time of the day.’
The 31-year-old added to Vanity Fair: ‘Somebody in France just published them. My trauma will exist forever.’
Elsewhere in the interview, Jennifer spoke out about former producer and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein.
She said she had managed to largely avoid him, but has certainly not gone without men being inappropriate during her career.
‘Harvey’s victims were women that believed that he was going to help them,’ she said. ‘Fortunately, by the time I had even come across Harvey in my career, I was about to win an Academy Award.

‘I was getting The Hunger Games. So I avoided that specific situation.’
Hunger Games star Jennifer previously spoke about the leaked photos, telling Vogue: ‘I think people saw (the hacking) for what it was, which was a sex crime, but that feeling, I haven’t been able to get rid of it.
‘Having your privacy violated constantly isn’t a problem if you’re perfect. But if you’re human, it’s terrifying.

‘When my publicist calls me, I’m like, “Oh, my God, what is it?”. Even when it’s nothing. I’m always waiting to get blindsided again.’
The actress had been the victim of a phishing campaign by Edward Majerczyk, from Chicago.
In January 2017, Majerczyk, then 29, was jailed for nine months after admitting hacking the accounts of 30 celebrities but was not convicted of posting the images online.
Jennifer, who won an Oscar for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, is known for her roles as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games and Mystique in X-Men, and is about to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the star-studded flick Don’t Look Up.

Netflix’s newest venture, which will also be released in cinemas next month, boasts an incredibly star-studded line-up, from Jonah Hill and Timothée Chalamet to Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.
Jennifer, 31, and Leo, 47, lead the cast, with J-Law being the top-billed actor, but she was paid $5 million (£3.7m) less than the Titanic star, despite the script being written with her in mind.
Speaking in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Jennifer was asked about the pay discrepancy, and she insisted she is ‘very happy’ with her deal.
The deal in question is a pay slip of $25m (£18.7m) to star in the flick, an absolutely mind-blowing amount of money for most people, but still significantly less than co-star Leo.
He was paid $30m (£22.4m), meaning Jennifer was paid 83 cents for every dollar given to Leo.
When asked about the deal, Jennifer admitted she ‘saw’ the pay discrepancy but appeared to accept that ‘Leo brings in more box office than I do’.

She added: ‘I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal.’
However, the actor, who shot to stardom through her role as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games franchise, acknowledged that ‘it’s extremely uncomfortable’ for women to ‘inquire about equal pay’.
She said: ‘If you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.’

Jennifer revealed, however, that she pushed to be the top-billed actor, after she and Leo were first were set to have an equal billing, and said her co-star was ‘very gracious about it’.
Netflix certainly didn’t hold much back when splashing the cash for the upcoming film, having secured both veteran and up-and-coming Hollywood stars for the comedy, as well as cameos from Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi.
A special cameo from Marvel actor Chris Evans has also been announced, along with appearances from Tyler Perry, Rob Morgan and Mark Rylance.

Don’t Look Up is from writer and director Adam McKay, who is behind some of the most iconic comedies of the past 20 years, including Stepbrothers and Anchorman.
The star-studded comedy follows a student astronomist and her professor (Jennifer and Leo) after they make the shocking discovery that a comet is heading straight for earth.
Don’t Look Up is released in cinemas on December 10, followed by Netflix on December 24.

There was no awkwardness between Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio as they posed together on the red carpet, not long after it was revealed he was paid $5million (£3.7m) more than her for their new movie.
Jennifer, 31, joined her co-star Leo, 47, at the New York premiere of their anticipated blockbuster Don’t Look Up on Sunday.
The Oscar-winning actress shone bright on the red carpet wearing a dazzling sheer gold gown which elegantly draped over her baby bump – Jennifer is pregnant and expecting her first child with husband Cooke Maroney.
Leo kept it smart and dapper with a dark blue suit and tie and his hair neatly slicked back.
The actors happily posed together for photos and joined each other for interviews with reporters on the red carpet, while also being pictured laughing around together at one point.
It comes after Jennifer addressed reports that she was paid a whopping $5m less than her male co-star to star in the film, despite being billed as the lead actor and the script being written with her specifically in mind.

The 31-year-old Hunger Games star is expecting her first child with New York City art dealer husband Cooke Maroney.
‘Well, I lost a tooth pretty early in the filming,’ she told the Associated Press, adding: ‘And I couldn’t go to the dentist until the end of the movie, so I had to film most of the movie toothless. That was my personal challenge.’
The film, directed by The Big Short filmmaker Adam McKay, stars Lawrence as astronomy student Kate Dibiasky, alongside owlish professor Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) as the pair discover there is a comet heading directly towards Earth.
Despite having top billing in the movie and it being written with her in mind, Lawrence earned $5 million (£3.7m) less than the Titanic star, with a pay slip of $25m (£18.7m) compared to DiCaprio’s $30m (£22.4m).

DiCaprio, 47, speaking alongside Lawrence said: ‘Talking to people with masks and shields all day… Usually, you know, from a creative perspective, you’re mixing it up with the cast and crew constantly, but we’re, you know, we’re completely isolated.
‘But, like I said, it was an amazing opportunity to work during Covid, for all of us to work, and especially do a movie that was, you know, about us believing in the scientific community. That was the coolest part.’
The film also stars Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry, with singers Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi also featuring.
Sir Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill, Ron Perlman, Himesh Patel and Melanie Lynskey round out the impressive cast.
Director McKay told AP of his approach to film-making: ‘You know, honestly, I would much rather be making Step Brother movies for the next 20 years, but the world got so crazy.
‘And, clearly, we’re living in a time of tectonic change. And very frightening times, especially when it comes to the climate.
‘Yeah, it was just, you know, those early movies that I did with Will [Ferrell] were a delight. And there is some point of view to those movies, but it just felt like it didn’t make sense to keep making those movies.
‘So, it’s not like I had some personal change. It was more that the world changed so radically that I, as a film-maker, you can’t ignore that.’
The film marks DiCaprio’s first screen appearance since Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood in 2019, while Lawrence has not starred in a movie since the X-Men instalment Dark Phoenix, also in 2019.
Don’t Look Up releses in selected UK cinemas from December 10 and will stream on Netflix from December 24.

Prepare yourself for a grim Crimbo (Pictures: Netflix)
Netflix has decided to buck the trend for its usual festive warmth and well wishes this holiday season by releasing what is likely the most depressing new viewing option out there on Christmas Eve – Don’t Look Up.
However, seeing a very close alternative reality writ large and so realistically on the big screen is quite the mind trip after what we’ve endured the past 21 months, and it’s almost a little too close to home to properly enjoy.
Of course, this is entirely the point of writer and director Adam McKay, whose past films (The Big Short, Vice) show he loves to pitch the darkest of parodies in (usually) fast-moving and complicated scripts.
This time though, the glitzy cast can’t quite stitch together the sprawling satire as the film drags in places through its almost two-and-a-half hour runtime.
It’s certainly still a movie to admire and appreciate though, as a sort of anti-Armageddon or Deep Impact. Astronomy grad student Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) and Dr Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) discover a comet on a direct collision course with Earth, little knowing that that catastrophe, which is usually the driving force of the standard apocalyptic film fare, is just the start of their woes as they struggle to tell people what they really don’t want to hear, with the help of Rob Morgan’s NASA scientist.
Lawrence is a treat as her usual deadpan wisecracking self, which isn’t much of a stretch for her, but she has an all-too-true trajectory as the crazy crying girl in the film when she tries to stress the danger of Earth’s situation on national television.
DiCaprio is also excellent as the owlish Mindy, middle-aged and perpetually low-level panicked as he grapples with the enormity of the task at hand, as well as being ordained the ‘sexy astronomer’ by the rabid but deaf American media.
However, the performance of the film of course belongs to Streep as the indifferent and popularity-minded President Orlean, who shares an upsettingly close bond with her sycophantic advisor and son Jason (Jonah Hill).
Welcome to a terrifying White House (Picture: Niko Tavernise/Netflix)
It is unsettling how good she is as this all-too-familiar presidential character, far more concerned with playing power games than the planet’s impending doom. Orlean presents as a slightly broader and more chaotic version of Streep’s celebrated Miranda Priestly, but just as dangerous (and this time, y’know, in control of nuclear weapons).
Cate Blanchett is virtually unrecognisable as overly primped presenter Brie, who only likes to focus on upbeat stories for morning show The Daily Rip with her co-anchor Jack (Tyler Perry) – even if the world is going to end. Her character’s mannerisms and agenda seem all too plausible, and exactly the type of thing that encourages the questionable behaviour of a Gen Z pop icon (Ariana Grande in a pretty savage cameo).
Don’t Look Up is also the film that put a tan and blinding veneers on Sir Mark Rylance as mild-mannered tech tycoon Peter Isherwell and cast Chalamet as a lovable stoner, so snaps for that. But the thrust of the plot involving billionaire Isherwell (it doesn’t take a genius to work out how he might fit into the story) takes a fair old while to actually get going.
Lawrence and DiCaprio have to battle to alert mankind to the dangers of the comet (Picture Niko Tavernise/Netflix)
As always, the movie’s main issue is it’s just too long for its own good. Lopping off half an hour could tighten this up into a pacier thriller with comedic elements – but again, it’s not quite as funny as it thinks it is. Laugh-out-loud moments are few and far between; it’s rather more grimaces and snorts of recognition.
The film’s ending does pack a punch, allowing for moments of real emotional sincerity in its cast and a finish that goes against the Hollywood grain. Also, if you want true stupidity shortly afterwards, don’t miss the mid-credits scene, which provides a fun pay-off.
Chalamet has a grand old time (Picture: Netflix)
Don’t Look Up is still a film to watch if you’re a fan of McKay or satire or any of the cast, as it provides a thoughtful if depressing proposition and strong performances.
It’s very well observed and nuanced too – but so much so that it’s realism, which could have perhaps done with a few breaks of broad comedy, steers you away from enjoyment.
After the resistance to facts seen in recent times, this foreshadowing of an all-too-possible reaction to an apocalyptic situation is perhaps just a bit too much… especially at Christmas.
Don’t Look Up releases in select UK cinemas on December 10 before streaming on Netflix from December 24.

Speaking at a press conference for the film via PA, Jennifer revealed that it was overwhelming meeting Ariana, admitting: ‘I mean, I’m a huge fan of her music and [Kid Cudi’s]…
‘It’s just like, you know, like overwhelming. ‘Cause our worlds don’t normally collide.’
The Oscar winner, who is currently pregnant with her first child with husband Cooke Maroney, joked: ‘I just felt like a radio contest winner. I just didn’t know how to talk to her. So I just, you know, did my best.’
Ariana stars in Don’t Look Up with Kid Cudi (Picture: PA)
Ariana and Kid Cudi perform the song Just Look Up in the movie, which the pair co-wrote and have released as a single.
Speaking about working with Ari, Kid Cudi gushed: ‘[She’s] an incredible artist, and you know, her vocal performance is just like stellar… it’s like her voice is just amazing.
‘But like, so I’m just really happy that we were able to figure it out, and it worked man. I’m really proud of it.’
The film has a star-studded cast, with Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Sir Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Himesh Patel and Melanie Lynskey also appearing.
It is also Leonardo’s first role since 2019’s Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood, which was directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Don’t Look Up will be released in selected UK cinemas from December 10 and will stream on Netflix from December 24.
